![]() This could be a sneaky way of keeping a bad team bad, or a misguided effort to bring a “big” name into town. Gay has a ridiculous $19 million player option for next year which he will pick up unless he’s an idiot. I feel like this is one of those short-sighted moves that will get the moderate NBA fan in Sacramento to tune in to this year’s Kings. Rudy Gay has been brutal all season long and he is laughably overpaid. Pat Cummings (Chicago): To be honest, I’m not totally sure. And, as Zach Lowe pointed out, Sac-town will have $71 million in committed salary next year before giving anything to Isiah Thomas, one of the lone bright spots on a flailing roster. With the growing dissent of Rudy within the league, the odds of him opting out of his $19 million option appears slimmer and slimmer. There is also a strong chance he stunts the development of Boogie Cousins and new acquisition Derrick Williams. The nerds have hated this guy for years, and his shooting percentage is actually down to 38% (woof) after the well-publicized corrective eye surgery he had this summer. I mean, he’s got talent, but we all know the story on Gay. Newsflash: this guy shouldn’t be (and mostly isn’t) considered a high profile talent anymore. Which is exactly what the Raptors did less than a year ago when they acquired Gay. The new owner wants to make a “splash” by acquiring a high profile talent. Steve DeBear (New York): I really don’t know. First things first – what are the Kings doing?
